From Beverly Hills to Shovelling Manure on a Farm

http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/02/26/economy.survivor.farm/index.html

Here's an article you may be interested in reading....a young couple have moved from Beverly Hills, (where he was working in life insurance) to Oregon. He lost his job due to the credit crunch and they have had to find a new way of life.

Well, they're not alone, this has happened to lots of folks, and will happen to a lot more. This economy isn't going to change overnight!

If you're a new reader to this blog, stick around....follow us through the year as we raise our own food, raise animals for meat and try to manage our homestead. You can also choose Food and Garden from the labels over there on the right hand sidebar.

And you know what's nice about that article?? The picture, look! Both Ed and Leah have a smile on their faces! I wish them all the best, as they rediscover what is important in life!

Yes, you got it, a roof over your head (so what if it's an Airstream? Pretty mobile, if you ask me!) food on their table, and getting acquainted again with the land.... Sphere: Related Content

Yeah, but I couldn't quite decide how I felt about them.

I so wish they had a blog so I could follow their progress or failure. (and I hope it's progress... but some people can never truly escape the materialism)

I'm not sure how I am reacting to them either. I think it strikes me a little off when anyone thinks this wonderful life is a step down. Know what I mean?

Thanks for the pointer, though. It is interesting to see that this is making the news now.

I think there would be lots of cityfolk who think this kind of move would be a "step down" in life....

Most people who make this kind of a move won't be doing it because they Want to, it will be beause they feel they Need to....

but this part of the article gives me hope....

"After the initial culture shock in the first month, Bird says she is slowly adapting to farm life. She learned how to build a fire pit, and she plans on growing a fruit and vegetable garden in the spring. She wants to buy more productive animals like cows. With the garden and some cows, she says, the couple won't have to purchase vegetables or milk from the grocery store."

This gal is already planning on how to begin living off the "farm" more....they have already decreased their "shelter" costs, and it seems to me, she is beginning to think of reducing the other living costs as well....

I hope they truly come to love their new lifestyle!

I so wish that I cared the slightest about these people (not)! Another in a long list of CNN articles about people who CHOSE to make a change, and CNN makes it look like they're typical, or a sign of the times. I could care less about these folks, and they do NOT represent what this country is facing. Nothing against them, but CNN is out of their minds! Let's sensationalize a little more, shall we??

I noticed on the story at CNN that the couple was living in Beverly Hills making over 100,000 a yr. thats a lot of money most places but not Beverly Hills. He was probably living above his means and this was the result. so before people get heartfelt over this. Keep in mind that there is a possibility that he was one of the many people that were living above their means and we as tax payers are now paying for their selfishness.

Anonymous, you must be doing quite all right financially with this economy and that's great....you probably won't get much out of this blog of ours...no problem!

aggie, you're probably right. I think there are lots of folks living above their means. I've been in Vancouver the last week and see the spending spending spending....

Our point in doing this blog (or one of them) is to show people that it's not That Hard to put in a garden. Hey, if it helps one person, I'm glad! I hate to think of people who can't pay their bills and wonder how to best feed their families, no matter if they over spent, got laid off, or a combination!

Welcome to our blog, peek back in a bit and see what we have been up to!
