We've almost finished pulling all the potatoes. The upper garden is done and there
are two rows left to do in the Animal Garden.
There's something kinda magical about digging potatoes....
when you see the first ones there in the soil....
And you uncover more and more dirt,
hoping to find more and more potatoes....
Of course the magic does start to wear off when you're on the 42nd plant!
And I realize there are a lot more plants to dig up!
We sort them right there in the field....
the little ones are getting cooked up for the pigs.
Any that we happen to slice while digging also go off to the pigs....
The nice big beauties go in a separate pile to save for seed for next year.
And only then do the rest go into paper feed bags to be put into the cold room.
There they will stay just fine until Spring...
when it will be time to plant the seed potatoes again.
Two bags of seed potatoes set aside.
Look at these Seigland seed potatoes...they are just beautiful!
A big box of Cariboo potatoes....
Two boxes of Fingerlings....aka Banana potatoes....
We cured them on the porch and rubbed some of the mud off them once they dried.
It was very muddy where there were 3 rows of taters planted...
We had a lot of rain for several days and that is when we dug a bunch of them up.
We're better off doing it on a sunny day when the wind is blowing...
this helps dry the potatoes in the field, then we pick them up later in the day.
Never let your potatoes stay out overnight, laying on the top of the soil.
Bring them inside the same day you dig them up....
we leave ours upstairs for a few days, then move them down to the cold room.

How many pounds total would you guess you got this year?
Linda, I just asked Gman and he figures we got around 600 lbs. I know we lugged a LOT down to the cold room!
That is really nice - should last a good long while!
