Although we quite like our kitchen, we would love to be able to make a few changes. It's a large kitchen with plenty of room to put in an island.
We would really like to do that! It would be much more efficient for all the canning we do. A large island could be custom designed so that the cupboards and drawers could hold a lot of our canning equipment. Jars would still need to be stored downstairs, because we have so many of them.
If we put in an island we could do all our filling of jars on there. Plus, we would have a large space for all the jars to be set on there when they come out of the canner. We like to leave our jars for 24 hours after they come out of the canner and so we could make use of the island for this. This would free up quite a bit of perimeter countertop.
I've always like the islands with an overhang on the one side. That way we could have barstools on that side, so we could just pull up a chair when we need to snap beans or shell peas.
I'm wondering about countertops. For those of you who have granite countertops, can you put hot pots (as in right off the stove) onto the granite?
What do you think would be the best for a countertop?

Why not think about putting in an island on wheels - like our converted workmans bench: (http://ecofootprintsa.blogspot.com/2010/05/kitchen-progress.html)
It seriously works a treat, and the wheels, which are lockable, enable one to move it in order to clean underneath it :-)
And your clever Gman could probably make the shelves adjustable :-)
I'm a fan of concrete countertops. DYI & durable and they look good.
I'm sure you know I meant D.I.Y.....
An island sounds so wonderful! I am in the process of trying to redesign my kitchen to be more user friendly. I never thought of a movable island like Dani suggested - great idea!
An island on wheels is a great idea. But if you have a stationary one add an electrical plug to it. You can then use your mixer or other small appliances if needed.
As to granite, it is gorgous but any stone is porous and could stain. There are a lot of sites online that give you the plus and minuses of different counter top materials.
When I did our kitchen, I went with stainless steel. Everyone thought I was crazy. I even raised the height of the counters so no more back pain when standing/bending over the counter for a long time. The island would be great a bit higher. The SS cleans up great, not pourous etc. I love mine even after 10 years.
Danni, your Island looks great! And I love the baskets...
check out her island here...

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I know Gman would love stainless steel, he is a welder after all.
Andy I have seen conrete tops and do love the look of them.
And yes putting it on wheels is an awesome idea! Will do!
I second the stainless steel suggestion. I don't have one but my dream kitchen sure would.
Solveig, thanks for the comment. I have yet to talk it over with the Gman, but I think he will want stainless too!
