Corn Seeds for 2011

A kind fellow in Oregon sent me some of his corn seed. It's called Yukon Chief and here is what I found out about it doing an Internet Search:

"A cold resistant, early maturing, all yellow variety that will germinate and grow in cold soils. The 3 to 4 foot stalks produce 6 to 7 inch slightly tapered ears that are moderately filled with 12 rows of kernels. Developed at the University of Alaska Research Station. Earliest variety in Alaska. Very early".

This is what the fellow who sent me the seed told me:

"The variety I have is Yukon -  it was developed for gardens in Alaska with an extremely short growing season 56days and it's an old heirloom type .

Here is what Victory Seeds has to say:

Yukon Chief Sweet Corn

55 days — This is another very interesting variety to home gardeners who have limited space and to folks with shorter growing seasons.

Developed at the University of Alaska, AES and released in 1958. It is one of the earliest (55 days to fresh stage) corn varieties. The plants are dwarf (three to four feet tall) and produce six to eight inch, yellow, sweet ears that are slightly tapered with about twelve rows of kernels. It germinates and grows well in cooler soils. Each packet contains 0.5 ounce, which is approximately 90 seeds.

I am looking forward to giving this a try. I may even just plant some outside in the vegetable garden. Usually I only plant a bit of corn inside the greenhouse. This is shaping up to be one of my 2011 Garden Experiments.

I'd be interested in hearing how this corn does here. I don't have a greenhouse.

By the way, if you need any wine bottles - I have a lot that I'd like to give away.

I see by googling it is available from some seed suppliers. I may have to give it a try too.

I definitely think this corn is worth a try. It's hard to grow corn outside here. Farther north, they can, but maybe they don't have the temperature swings we do?

Cicero, we're interested in your bottles. Please email me at annieandthegman@gmail.com and we can set something up! Thanks!
