You've Got Mail

I never did much like living in the City. Far too much noise, far too much traffic and far too many sirens. There is one thing I really do miss though about living in the City. I miss getting Mail everyday!

I enjoyed going to the mailbox every day to see what was in there. Bill, bill, letter, flyers, letter, card, bill, bill. That was pretty much everyday living at the mailbox.

Now that we are here in the Valley, we don't have door to door or even neighbourhood delivery. We have to drive 20 minutes to go get our mail. Twenty minutes on a gravel road to get our mail, actually.

So, needless to say, mail pickup has decreased. Now I look forward to Wednesday afternoons, that is the day I go into town and pick up the mail. Our weekly newspaper also gets delivered through the post office, so I can pick that up, come home and read through it with a nice cup of tea.

If you live in town, chances are you still have residential mailboxes. We had those in the city, although later on they changed to what you would call a neighbourhood box (actually called Superboxes for us Cancucklehads).  Every couple of blocks there is a large mailbox with about twenty compartments, for all the folks who live in that area.

I read recently that the US Postal Service was considering stopping Saturday delivery to homes. I didn't know that even existed. I don't remember a time when mail was ever delivered house to house in Canada on a Saturday.

So what do you have for your mail delivery? Does it come right through a mailslot at your house? Or maybe to a locking mailbox at the end of your driveway? Do you have to pick your mail up at the Post Office? Sphere: Related Content

We've just got the regular ol' US Mail standard box at the end of the driveway. We get delivery 6 days a week, but I'd be fine if they'd cut back to 2 or 3 days a week. Most of my mail sits in a pile until Saturday morning anyway.

In rural Nova Scotia we still get our mail delivered to our (unlocked) box at the end of the driveway. In the winter you have to shovel at least 2 car lengths out in front of the box or they don't deliver. We found this out the hard way! The sad thing is, we wouldn't have found this out (we are new to the province) if it wasn't for the distinct lack of junk mail!

We get 5 day a week home delivery for our mail. I love it but I miss being part of a central post office.

I used to live in a small town with a post office and lock boxes there. It was a nice place to see everyone and catch up on local news.

So Andy you do get mail delivery on Saturdays.

Yes I imagine everyone would have to shovel out around their mailbox in order for delivery. I can't see the postal workers having to slug through snow at every mailbox on their route.

You know, one of the nicest things about getting our mail now at the post office is saying Hi to everyone we run into there. It's a small town, but you can meet up with a lot of people just going to the post office!
