Hilling Potatoes

Yesterday, I finally went out and hilled the potatoes in the main veggie garden.....9 rows, all done.
I hilled the ones down in the Barn Garden already. I will have to hill the 2 rows in the Animal Garden still, but they are not quite ready yet.
I'll be trying to hill each plant 3 times before the season is thru.....

Although it has been raining a LOT here over the last week (yeahhhhh, we really needed it!) once it stops and the sun comes out, it gets hot pretty quick.
So I was glad to have another chore done with. I went up and sat on the porch, had a beer and stared at my taters, lol!

And then I looked over and saw da Wolf, laying under his special shade tree. I think it's a pretty good pic, it is hard to get a good pic of him!

I think that it's a good pic too. I kick myself as I don't have many pics of my first dog "Tina" who was also a dobie. So with Abby I just take lots of pics so that way I will have lots of them and when she is gone they will all be good pics.

D says my potatoes grow because I look at them and talk to them .... yes I love my potatoes ... and usually they grow pretty good.

Nice dog. Ours is just a little duffer next to yours.

Great dog! So serious looking. My beagles are, shall we say, not serious? How about foolish? :)

Love your garden. So neat and trim compared to my unruly jungle of fun.

As for potatoes, how far up would you say you get them hilled from the original planting point? Do you just take from the ground between rows? Do you pile it up beforehand so there is plenty?

Christy, sorry for such a late reply....we hill up as much soil as we can from between the rows and plants.

Then we start adding composted manure, or whatever we can find. I'm just guessing but I'd think we get the soil up about a foot high around the plant...

If we had a lot more composted manure, we could just keep hilling and hilling along with the plant's growth....but we never have our act That together...one day maybe.

People grow them in tires, or containers of some kind, that works too I have heard.
