Do You Use Coupons When You Shop??

Couponing seems to be all the rage right now. Families can really reduce their grocery bill by using coupons, especially on Double or Triple Coupon Day.

I watched the new show Extreme Couponing the other night. Wow! Simply amazing how fantastic some people do with their food bill. One lady I think had $600 worth of groceries and paid something like $5 for all of it!

Do you use coupons when you go shopping? How well have you done?

Many items I would not buy, like the processed food, I would not use all those cans of Chunky soup, etc. I do think though, that I should start looking into the non food couponing. Cleaners, clothing, things like that I would definitely use.

If you have any great links for coupon sites, leave me a comment along with your feedback! Sphere: Related Content

I love to use coupons when I actually remember to buy the Sunday paper. I've been thinking about buying a printer too (my old one finally died) to print more found online. I like eblebco.com.

I too try and avoid the processed food. Although if I see a coupon for Goldfish crackers, I jump on it. lol.

I watched the same show the other day and was floored! The only thing that bugs me is when a family has 20 tubes of toothpaste. Or 50 sticks of deodorant. It's one thing to donate them (which some do) but it's another thing to hoard. I wonder if some of these people actually have shopping problems.

We don't have television so I haven't seen the show, but I've known some zealous couponers in my day. I tried it when my kids were small, but I found I was buying some things just because they were a bargain and not because I would normally buy them at all. These days I only use the store coupons. Our grocery has GREAT COUPON deals twice a week ...different items and combinations of items each day ...but always a good deal. My weekly list consists of what we need to restock plus $10-$20 I budget for coupon specials if they suit me that week.

I know there are hoarders out there and I've known a few up close and personal. But some people might paint me with that brush if they saw my food stores. We keep a 12 month supply of everything except meat and dairy since we don't (yet) have a freezer. But I definitely have a 12 month supply of toothpaste, deodorant (mine and his), shampoo, conditioners, etc. Once we achieved the 12 month supply level, we just restock as we use the products. For us a 12 month supply of toothpaste is 13 tubes ...deodorant is 12 of his and 12 of mine. Depending on how many people are in the household, 20 tubes of toothpaste and 50 sticks of deodorant might be just right. I'm just sayin...

Couponing is tough. There aren't enough of the products that we would use available with coupons. The last time we tried the coupon to make a purchase it required purchasing two and the product was shown with two printer cartridges in it. The trick on that one was to buy two PACKAGES, which was a lot more money to be spent than anticipated.
I would love to find coupons for canning jars and supplies.
Mostly, I appreciate the locally owned grocery store that keeps the prices as low as possible without any coupons.
It must be a thrill to buy $600 worth of goods and pay $5 though!!

I find that in Canada the opportunities for couponing are very small compared to the U.S. There is no way that we would be able to do what they did on that show, although I'd love to give it a try. Quite a few years ago Safeway would have double coupon days and I was able to save quite a bit but they quit doing that after a very short time. I do get some coupons from Save.ca but they have a very small selection.

I agree - couponing in Canada is not like in the States - we don't even have double coupon day here!

Couponing is good -I just got Free ketchup the other day with a coupon. It really helps too in the personal prodocts area (like toothpaste, deodorant, etc.) and household. Not too many people can coupon like those people in the show though. I'm really not sure I would want to!

We have a lady at our karate school that is a total couponer! She always talks about what she saves and it is impressive. The downside for me is that what she buys aren't things I purchase for my family. To much processed and prepackaged food. When we get coupons for jars and lids I run out to snatch those up in a heart beat though!

You have all left some great comments. I agree that Canada does not seem to have the opportunities that the US has.

And like you, I don't want the processed foods, or not much of it, that is for sure!

I think I will look into coupons for the non food items though.

I could NOT believe all the stuff the folks on that show had squirreled away! Unreal! BUT, hey in case of illness or job loss, when funds are tight, they will no doubt be very happy they have all that foodstuff on hand. I know I would. And it sure does count towards "being prepared"
