Moving the Meat Birds Outside

Finally! We got it done!!! The ditch, that is....the one down at the barn outside the meatbird room.

We've been shovelling pickup truckloads of sand for a few days now. There's a gravel pit down the road from us....for the folks who work on the roads. They don't mind if people come to get sand and gravel there....as long as you don't bring big machinery in.
For us to pay delivery fees to have a truck come way out here would be really expensive. Free is better right? So, yeah....it's over with, and we're glad we won't have to haul gravel again for that job.
So now the ditching is done on that side, and we should really be able to see the difference next year when the Big Melt happens again in late winter....

We closed off the two ends with chicken wire, threw down some hay and then opened the doors to the meat bird room.

Well, there are a couple of them out there. We'll give them their late afternoon feeding out here, so we can get them all out and then we'll give their room a good cleaning with the pitchfork.

Chickens really do lay around in the oddest positions! They are 4 weeks old today, halfway thru their short lives....

Ditching at The Barn

We're a little late to the party on this one......but the Gman is working on getting the ditching done down at the barn.

Using his excavator, he dug a trench. Then we went around the property using the Little JD with the trailer, picking up all the rocks we could find. And there were a LOT!

Once we cleaned up the rocks, he used the tractor to bring down loads of drainrock we had sitting in a pile by the driveway.

Now we have to get some sand to fill it in. But at least, the perimeter is almost done. Then we have to handdig a trench thru the breezeway.

Down At the Barn

Last week, the snow finally slid off the barn roof. What a mess....remember that ice storm we had back before Christmas? Yeah, well, that caused the snow on the roof to develop a good layer of icy crust.

That, in turn, helped the snow stay ON the roof until this past week. As it is, we still have snow on the woodroom roof, and part of the house...

Here's the barn area....this is where we grew the Animal Garden. See the gate in the middle right of the pic?

The fencing in the foreground is 4 feet high...so you can see we still have a lot of snow. There is definite meltage happening tho!

Compare it with this pic last summer....

Here's the other side....this is where the meat birds had their run last year.

And...here's the aisleway. This is the pathway we use to walk from barn over to where we had the pigs last year.

Looks like a bunch of wire has been taken down by the weight of the snow.....funny, I tried to take that wire down in the Fall, but I couldn't get the staples out. Well, they're out now!!!
The days are getting warmer - pretty soon everything will be a muddy oozy mess....I can't wait! Cuz, after that, comes green green grass and hands in dirt!
